On November 4th 2016, Pr. Louis-Martin and Mehdi Mahnam presented their research “A column-and-row generation heuristic to Volumetric-Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) treatment planning problem” to the Medical Physics Unit Noon Seminar Series 2016-2017 at McGill.

Abstract :

In this presentation, we propose a novel heuristic algorithm for Volumetric-Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) treatment planning problem optimizing the tradeoff between the delivery time and the treatment quality. We provide a new mixed integer programming model considering dynamic arcs around the patient in which the multi-leaf collimator leaf positions, gantry speed, and dose rate are determined, simultaneously. For this model, a heuristic algorithm, based on simultaneous column-and-row generation, regarding the dependence of aperture configuration in columns and the time restriction in rows, is proposed; then, a new objective function for the pricing problem is proposed. The efficiency of the algorithm and treatment qualities are evaluated on a benchmark clinical prostate cancer case and the computational results have shown a useful treatment is achievable in about 3.8 minutes.
