Menel studies a scheduling problem in which outpatients require chemotherapy appointments according to a protocol. Treatments need to be administrated at specific dates. This problem is motivated by a study of chemotherapy scheduling practices at the Centre d’oncologie de l’hôpital Notre-Dame de Montréal. The oncology center uses a two-phase process in which patients are first assigned to specific dates and times and then assigned to resources (nurse, chair/bed). The team proposes a mathematical programming model to solve the scheduling problem in one phase. This problem is examined by considering its stochastic nature, by smoothing resource utilization (pharmacy, nurses and chairs/beds), and by minimizing closing time.
