Arnaud is an engineering student at Télécom ParisTech and currently completing his master’s degree at École Polytechnique de Montréal. His research project aims at developing a decision support system for the scheduling of operating rooms at CHU Sainte-Justine. Given the importance of the hospital’s department of surgery, improving its efficiency would be synonymous with better quality of care for the patients and substantial savings for the hospital. The objective of this optimization is to minimize the amount of cancellations and to maximize the use of resources. Moreover, the stochastic characteristic of the input data (i.e., surgery duration, available resources) is inherent in the medical field and is therefore important to be taken into account in order to obtain a feasible solution to a real situation. Thus, this problem is computationally challenging and needs operation research tools to be tackled in an acceptable amount of time.
